  1. I think the most important symbol in “The Great Gatsby” is that money kills or money is the root of all evil. It is very obvious when pretty much the whole story is about a man trying to get rich enough to get a girl back and it all ends up bad. Gatsby’s intentions were good and did not mean to harm anyone but it just turned out in a horrible way. Myrtle gets hit by Daisy in her car and Myrtle dies. George thinks Gatsby did so George kills Gatsby. Then George ends up killing himself after killing Gatsby. And this whole problem revolved around money.

  2. An important symbol in The Great Gatsby is living in the past or reminiscing. Pretty much the whole story is about how Gatsby wants to relive the memories of him and daisy before Gatsby left for war. Gatsby goes to college and become rich and builds his huge mansion and flaunts his money thinking that if he has money, Daisy will love him. Gatsby even made sure to move across the water just so he could see the green light of the dock and be able to think of Daisy. Gatsby doesn’t even care that Daisy is married to Tom. He believes that Daisy doesn’t love Tom and he tries to get her to convince everyone at the dinner that they are going to be together but Tom won’t allow it. Gatsby is too involved in the past and in the end pays the price.

  3. In the Great Gatsby some important symbols are the photo from Oxford and the war medal that Gatsby carry in his pocket. These symbols are important because they are a link to the past that Gatsby can not let go of. This past is why he is still in love with Daisy. He wants to let go of the past because he was poor and now he is not. He wanted to be born rich and not to have become rich. This is why he changed his name. By becoming Gatsby and not Gatz, he is now a self created rich person. He was born rich and that is why he is rich. In reality he was the one that made all of his money. Because of this he needs to let go of his past.

  4. A symbol in “The Great Gatsby” is that greed in wealth and life lead to destruction. The entire story is about all these people seeking a life that can buy happiness. Gatsby is trying to get back the woman he loves by becoming wealthy. He believes she will love him him he is a rich man. In the end, Daisy just stays with Tom because of the security of wealth him and his family have. These people truly belive their money will bring them the happiness they want. Each person realizes or settles with what they have, because they see they will never experience true happiness.

  5. There are many symbols in “The Great Gatsby,” but one of the main symbols is Gatsby’s picture of Oxford and his war metal that he received. They show that Gatsby does not want to let go of his past and that he longs for it because of something he had back then but doesn’t in the present and that something is Daisy. The relationship they had in the past was effected by Gatsby’s want to become rich and provide well for Daisy. When he returns from the war he knows Daisy is married, yet still chooses to go back to Louisville to remember the times he spent with her.

  6. the most important motif found in the Great Gatsby is the one that not everyones intentions and charectors are apparent, and that some would go to great lengths to hid such flaws to satify their own motives. we see this in Gatsby, Tom, and Daisy. In Gatsby, we see this as he hides his past and spins a new life for himself. In Tom we see a man who trumpets family values while at the same time carrying on an affair. And in Daisy we see a girl who appears to be without charector flaw but is really a woman whose ambitions rest on money and privilige.

  7. I believe the most important symbol or motif in “The Great Gatsby” is wealth. Gatsby once fell in love when he was younger and now cant let go of his one love, Daisy, who he didn’t marry because he was poor. So Gatsby is stuck in the past and will do anything it takes so he can get Daisy back. Daisy seems to only care for who has money so Gatsby acquires wealth to gain back Daisy’s love. Once daisy learns of his wealth she admits to still loving him but Tom, her husband, will not let her go.

  8. I think in the “Great Gatsby” the most important symbol is envy, greed, or money. The characters in this story strive off of wealth and money. They think as if money and wealth and social status will fulfill their life and they will be happy. But we soon come to realize that in reality material things can not satisfy the heart completely. Caught up in a love quarel money and wealth drive these characters to lows and dramatic situations which end up in a tragedy. This story teaches us that there is more to life than wealth and social status.

  9. One symbol from this story is Gatsby’s lavish parties he throws every night. In the 1920s a sort of new standard for the wealthy came about. Since it was all about social popularity it was necessary for the rich to show off their good tidings. The first party in the story is the little gathering they have at Tom and Daisy’s house. It has a sense of understated simplicity compared to the flaunting style of Gatsby. At Tom’s we see the picture of the American dream. The happy, well off couple has been all over the world and has settled in a beautiful house in an island off of New York. This dream is shattered when Tom is excused from the table to take a call from his mistress. This proves that money and power are not everything and they will not make you happy. If Tom was happy he wouldn’t have cheated on his wife and the same goes for Daisy reuniting with Gatsby.

  10. The ashes in mounds by the gas station are in my opion of how dirty cities like new york are. It also makes me feel like somebody doesn’t care for the cleaness of the city and doesn’t have to see it everyday. Because if they had to see and deal with it they would not just put it in mounds. They would find other ways to dispose of it. It also makes me think of it as the main symbol also because its resembles Gatsby, Nick and Daisey because all the do is dirty things.Like cheating on there partners and bootlegging and stalking.

  11. The most important theme in “The Great Gatsby” in my opinion is the green light. It is at the end of Daisy’s dock and serves several purposes. It seems as if Gatsby observes it on a regular basis in order for it to guide him. He thinks that the light symbolizes the future and what could come of it. He views it as if it can foresee his life. Gatsby also perceives it as a symbol of hope. Hope that Daisy will one day return to him. That’s about all I have to say about that…
